Manaiakalani Film Festival- Magic Student's

Mrs Richardson gave us an essay that was way too hard. She kept us in for morning tea so we couldn't go out and play. She is so mean that we decided to turn her into a toad. Luckily for us, Mrs R had taught us how to write spells for turning people into toads. We had all the ingredients and set to work.
Our spell worked. Mrs Richardson was a toad but.......... Tuporo was now the teacher! Oh no! He soon found out that it was hard work being a teacher and wanted Mrs Richardson back. The potion was still in the classroom... Fingers crossed it would turn everything back to normal....

Tricky Mrs Richardson

WALT read and follow instructions.

It was late in the afternoon and Mrs R gave us a task. We had to follow the instruction and Mrs R said that there was a trick. She even said that if we got all the instructions right she would give us $20. We were only allowed 10mins to complete all our instructions and there were some really hard ones. We all got to work. All of us wanted that $20!

It was really disappointing that none of us finished even half of the tasks before the time was up. We complained that it was impossible!

Then..... Mrs R read the instructions to us while we listened...... As it turns out.... we missed the first instruction..... the most important one.

It said to read all the instructions carefully before starting. The last instruction was forget the instructions just put your name on the sheet and hand it into your teacher!

..... She tricked us!

.......But, we did learn that we have to read carefully and look at every instruction.

Murky Mud to Chrystal Clear

We have been talking about the Waikato River and how we can use it. We thought the most important way people use the River is to drink from it. We know the Waikato River is really dirty. We would not drink from the river because we may end up in the hospital. We were thinking about ways it could be cleaned. We thought that if we added clean water to the dirty water it would become clean again. We did an experiment. We put coffee and glitter into a cup of clean water. Then we added clean water to see if it would be all clean. It was still dirty but there was more water in our cup. We had to keep thinking...... We came up with an idea that we could use a machine that had tiny holes so the water could get through but the dirt would get stuck. Mrs Richardson gave use a filter that we used to strain our dirty water. A filter is like a bag with tiny holes in it. When we strained our dirty water threw the filter, the glitter got stuck but, the water was still brown from the coffee. The water was lighter than before. We came to the conclusion that you could clean the water from the Waikato River using a huge filter.

Using the Atlas

We are learning about the Waikato River. Most of us didn’t really know where the Waikato River was so Mrs Richardson taught us how to use an Atlas. We looked at the key (or symbols) for different things like a river, which was a blue squiggly line. Towns were black circles and road were red lines. We found the Waikato River in the North Island of New Zealand. We found that the Waikato River starts with many small streams on the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu. It empties into the Tasman Sea and empties into Lake Taupo. The River has many lakes that join onto it and that it passes through many towns such as Cambridge, Hamilton, and Ngaruawahia. It is joined by, the Waipa River, at Ngaruawahia. It then flows north through the Taupiri Gorge to enter the lower Waikato region. It goes further north at Huntly and then Meremere, where the Whangamarino and Maramarua Rivers join it. From Mercer, where the Mangatawhiri River joins it, the Waikato flows west and southwest. Just before its mouth at Port Waikato, the Araroa River joins from the north. There are lots of small islands that are located in the long, thin part of the river as it passes through swampy land between Meremere and the coast, the largest Island is Motutieke Island.

A Pop -Up Card for Mum!

We have been learning about the structure of instructional writing Since it is Mother’s Day on Sunday, Mrs Richardson said we could make our Mums a pop up card. We were really excited, but…. There was a catch. We had to write and follow our own instructions. We got given some draft paper and some ideas of how to make things pop up. We tried lots of ways and as a class wrote out how we could do it. We had to start with a title, then add in what materials we would need, (in order of use) then finally add our method. A method are the instructions or, ‘what you do’ The next day we were so excited to start making our cards, but…. There was another catch! Mrs Richardson had cut up all our instructions. We had to put them in order again. When we thought we had them in order, we could use them to start making our cards. It was hard to stop and follow the instructions when we thought we knew what the next step was, but we had to make sure we followed the instructions. Mrs Richardson thinks we did a really good job. Here are some pictures of our work.

What We Want to Know!

This term we are going to be learning all about the Waikato River. Mrs Richardson asked us what we knew about the River. At first we didn’t know very much at all. Then Mrs Richardson gave us an activity to do where we had to write on the outside of the piece of paper all the things about the words ‘Waikato’ and ‘River’ which turned out to be quite a lot. After we talked about our ideas we all had a space on the paper to write down the things that we didn’t know. We had lots of them! We only had four minutes to get all our thinking down. We had lots of questions on our pages. We had to look through them and choose which ones we would like to answer in our Topic study. We had to think really had because we didn’t want to ask closed questions otherwise our topic study would be over really quickly! These are our picture frames showing all the things we know about the Waikato River. All the things we don’t know and our key question we would like to find out. Stay tuned to see if we answer all our questions. These are our picture frames.

The Reign Of God

We have been learning all about God's Kingdom working through us on Earth. We learnt all about the Good Samaritan who saw a person laying on the road and picked him up. It tells us that we should help others even if we don't know them. This is my creation

Working Together

In Room five we have been learning about what should happen in our classroom so that we can learn everything we need to know and make it fun. Mrs Richardson gave us 6 cups and string attached to a rubber band in the middle. We had to work as a team to put the cups in a tower without using our hands. The tall tower was really hard. We had to work as a team to complete our task. By helping each other and using team work we were able to finish our tower. This got us thinking about what things we needed in our classroom We came up with...... Working together to help each other Never give up Try our best Use Learning talk Talk and listen skills will help our learning.

Manaiakalani Film Festival - Magic Teacher

This has been our first year learning with our chromebooks. One of the first things we learnt was how to carry our chromebook. Carrying our chromebook open is the wrong thing to do. When carrying your chromebook have the lid closed and hold it with two hands. If we need to get out of or in a chair we leave the chromebook on our desk. We have not had one broken chromebook in Room 5 this year!

We have an important message to share but we also wanted it to be funny so our audience could be entertained. We are looking forward to people seeing our movie on the Xtreme Screen and hope they remember our magical message.

Build a Factory - By Kevin

WALT persuade to build a factory on our courts.

I know I have learned this by making three reasons why we should build a factory, and by making a conclusion. My digital object shows why we should build a astonishing factory.

These are my reasons and conclusion.

Building a factory is fantastic because we will get CCTV. We should let them build a factory because we will get CCTV.  Also it would be easier to find the criminal, because the  face will be in the camera. Even it will be easier to spot a fire and our Chromebooks will be safe.

We should build a factory so kids can design their own playground. We will be happy to design our own special playground. Kids will be happy, kids will be joyful, kids will be great. Children will believe they should design their own playground because we will be able to play on our new fantastic playground.

Building a factory is Marvelous because we will get free food. We will get to eat and experience their food. St. Patrick's children will be wanting to have their delicious food. After St. Patrick's children have eaten their food, they might even want to work in the factory when they grow up.

If we build a fantastic factory we will be amazed and excited to go on, and play on the new gleaming playground. We might even get delicious free food. Our school will be safe just because CCTV stays of 24/7.

The Way of the World - Elaine

 The Way Around The World

A group of Children were sitting on wooden gate there was one girl and three boys. They were all sitting together, then Biddy picked a pumpkin stalk and climbed for a little rest. Then they jumped off the gate. Biddy came up with an idea she said to the other boys, "let’s make our own band" They knew that Mr Cooper wouldn't mind them picking some pumpkin stalks but Mr Coopers wasn't really their friend.

The Main Point of the story is that Biddy and her friends made a band a said that the way of the world. The way of the world means that, that is just how things are, even if they don't seem very fair.

In Room 5 for reading kit Kat's group have been reading a book about the way of the world I have wrote a summary of what the story is and what the main point of the story is this is what I wrote in my own words and this is a picture of the main point.

Filters- Vine

                                                    WALT separate an insoluble mixture

In Room 5 we have been making a filter with our groups. I know that insoluble means two materials can't mix. We made filters because that is a way to separate the two materials. Our groups filter almost won but we didn't.

This is me and my group's creation. We separated water from glitter.

Estimating by Celeste

WALT use non standard to find the area for the shape. Mrs Richardson told us to go outside to and draw a shape to see how many students could fit in the area of the by estimating how many people could fit in the area.I know that I have achieved this by estimating the area of my shape and checking to see if that was right.
We were wrong we estimated that 5 students could fit in the area of the shape but it was 6 students that could fit in the area. This is my group sorting out how much students could fit.
